In 1860 George Mclean Rose and Robert Hunter worked at the printing offices of Thompson & Co. in Quebec, Canada. Thompson was dissolved that year and in 1861 it was bought out by Rose and Hunter. In 1864 Hunter, Rose & Co. successfully bid in its own name a five-year contract as legislative printers to the Province of Canada.
